First post the past
Starting to go upward is a very exciting moment following hard on the heels of the satisfaction of completing (well very nearly almost) our flooring and being able to galavant around without fear of maiming ourselves. As soon as the putting up of the first post was past (isn't that an electoral system?) we took off in our trusty Hilux ute and headed out to see Ray and have a look at these two recycled posts he's tracked down. We have two posts in the house which will be visible, all the rest being hidden within walls. So we wanted something with a bit of character. What we found was a couple of lovely old pieces of 120 x 120 in 4m lengths, very structurally sound and strong.
Ray gave me a few tips about cleaning up the outside of this timber and I set about sanding and brushing the rough bits off with the help of Ray's tools, after he had pulled out all the nails. It took a while but I brought out some great features such as the original saw marks from some time around 1920. The timber came from an old factory so who knows what kind of action it has seen. I can't wait to put some kind of oil on it to see how it comes out. That's tomorrow's job.
Meanwhile we brought the posts back to the build on the back of the ute, over an hours drive and completely free of any large load brouhaha. We unloaded the posts on to the floor and stood in the darkness listening to the crickets and looking at the stars. What a lovely spot we're building in.
