It's a very exciting day today. We have received our flooring and insulation so it's time to create some nice flat safe surfaces. We went for an early morning start to try and beat the predicted heat today. We hired some floor clamps from the local hire place, dropped in for some adhesive, as I had forgotten to arrange to get this. It was fantastic to stack the flooring sheets up on the joists when they arrived and just looking at it I knew that getting around on the build was about to get much easier. So as conditions worsened - the temperature had reached 40˚c (104˚ f) by 11am and the wind was gusting up to about 70 or 80kph (50mph) - we tried to just get on a couple of sheets before going home to wait out the heat and wind.
So gee whiz I was surprised when I lost my footing and went straight down with one leg on either side of a joist - and that's where I'm thankful. Somehow I landed almost safely with some good scrapes but mostly a very big and sore lumpy bruise on my knee. Could be worse! Nothing broken. I believe I may have uttered a few phrases like "gosh", "ouch" and "by hokey I appear to have slipped!". That was a very sure sign that our day of building was over, unless we get the ultimate in cool changes coming through tonight. Natasha insisted on me going to the ute to sit down and nurse my injuries and pride while she packed everything up. What a wife.
I am worried about some of our freshly delivered materials blowing away but there's not much more we can do about that. As I write this the temperature has risen to 46.5˚c (116˚f), and I've never had heat like this before. So I'm still quite excited about moving on to doing the floor but I am very glad not to be out there in it this afternoon.
As soon as we got home and unpacked things we went straight to bed and slept for 2 lovely hours. Once again, we can't wait for the stable temperature we'll get from being in our finished house. Luxury.
